HANDS OF GOD WIDOWS SUPPORT INITIATIVE (HOGWIN) LAUNCHES 100 WIDOWS CHRISTMAS FOODBANK PROGRAM

As the yuletide season beckons, Hands of God Widows Support Initiative has flagged off a campaign tagged 100 widows Christmas foodbank program. The aim of the project is to support at least one hundred indigent widows and their children with food packs in the spirit of the yuletide season.

In the true HOGWIN tradition and keeping with the mantra “widows matter too”, efforts are underway to ensure that identified widows within Satellite town and its environs are well-catered for during this Christmas season.

According to phranklin Audu, Executive Director at HOGWIN, our overarching goal is to see that widows around us are well taken care of because indeed they are just like everyone one of us. Widowhood should be no basis for discrimination and stigmatization as we currently see in society because the loss of one’s spouse is already in itself a huge burden and the least we can do is treat such people with empathy and care.

The 100 widows Christmas foodbank is scheduled to hold on Saturday, December 5th 2022, and the beneficiaries of this event would be hosted at a party where they would benefit from sharing the experiences of one another with the older widows providing words of comfort to the much younger ones. The event would climax with the presentation of food packs to the participating widows and their children which we believe will avail them the opportunity to enjoy “Christmas rice” like the rest of us.

We, therefore, enjoin well-meaning Nigerians and kind people all over the world to support this drive and also look out for widows in their communities to extend a hand of relief.

Widowhood is one of life’s most traumatizing events. Some women never recover from the effects of the loss of their spouse, others suffer deteriorating health and in extreme cases, some actually die shortly after. These incidences are very often made worse due to certain harmful discriminatory cultural practices and social stigmatization that widows are made to endure upon the death of their husbands. It is estimated that upon the demise of their husbands, widows may lose up to 75% of their support including from friends and close family members. If this report is anything to go by, it clearly shows that widows by virtue of life’s happenstance can only look to the community for a chance to get another shot at having a productive life.

In Nigeria, there are over fifteen million widows with around twenty-one million children to cater to with little or no help. We believe that enforcement of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) law 2015 will go a long way in improving the welfare of widows in our society.
